Can fish make friends with other species of fish in a fish tank?

We have a koi and a chinese hifin shark. They look like they could be from the same family but they aren’t. But they never leave each other’s side. And when the shark was sick, the koi sat by it’s side the entire time and even helped to push him to the surface to get food. They nuzzle and cuddle each other all the time.. it’s really cute. but i was wondering if anyone else knows about this kind of behavior in fish, or if they have experienced it in their own tanks.

my friend tried that and they kiled eachother. so it wasnt pretty, but in this case your fish seem to like eachother so dont seperate them it will just bring sadness and could die of depression.

Hey now, fish can and DO make friends! Look at clown loaches. They’re incredibly social- so social, in fact, that their interaction with other clown loaches is often crutial to their health! A sole clown loach has been known to ‘grey out’- their colors fade, and they become lethargic- when alone. This is actually due to loneliness! They need at least another clown loach in a tank with them to be completely satified. Also, my rainbow shark- which is known to be aggressive and territorial- babies my kuhli loaches. It offers them its cave at night to sleep in, and when the other bigger fish are hogging the food, it chases them away and waits until the kuhlis have had a turn. Fish are remarkably social and intelligent. People just don’t recognise all of the fantastic things they can do or feel, because people can’t relate to them. They’re slimy, and breathe underwater. People relate to dogs and cats better, because they’re fluffy, and interactive thoroughly with humans. But hey- I’ve never been clawed by a rainbow shark, and as a matter of fact, one has never peed on my floor either ;)
Fish can definitely make friends- long term friends. It’s even scientifically proven. 3 pairs of goldfish were kept in 3 different tanks in a laboratory for a month together. Their interactions were recorded- the goldfish at first strayed from each other on opposite sides of the tank. As the month went on, they began sharing space, food and interactions. Then, they mixed up the pairs. The fishes took opposite sides of the tank. Eventually, to confirm the experiment, the fish were returned to their month-long partners. Instantly, they began to interact. Check it out on wikepedia!
So there you have it! Fish can make buddies. ;)

yeah, they do make friend not because they want to..

fish that stay together and interact with each other is because they are schooling fish or shoaling fish… They stay together for protection… When a shoaling fish like a hifin shark is by himself, he need to find comfort, so a koi fits the bill… And the koi is somewhat of a shoaling fish too

    it’s in their genetic makeup.
